Book Riot: Young Adult Quarterly Box #2

This week I received the second Book Riot: Young Adult Quarterly Box. I enjoy receiving the subscription book boxes. Each box is $50 and they are delivered every three months. This makes this box very affordable. I am usually very happy with the contents of this box and their other box designed for adult readers. Each box has a theme and the theme for this box is friendship. In the box this month I got some great items. The first item in the box was a book light. It also came with a pack of cards that look like library classic library cards. You can use them to make lists, take notes, or keep track of books you lend out. This box also came with three books. I loved that so many books where included this month! The first book is Everything Leads to You by Nina LaCour. I had not heard of this book but I am very interested in it. It is a story about finding out who you are and finding adventure. I am interested to see the female relationships presented in this novel and how the others looks at teen issues. The second book is A Sense of the Infinite by Hilary T. Smith and it also came with a signed book plate. This one looks very interesting. It looks like it is about becoming your own person, defining yourself, and coming to terms with your past. I can't wait to dive into this book. This book also came with three postcards that have quotes from the book on them. The third book is Chasing Shadows by Swati Avasthi with graphics by Craig Phillips. I love that this book has graphics within the text. This book is about dealing with a tragedy and how that can effect a friendship and how you deal with that. This is another book I had not heard of and am excited to dig into! Overall I am very excited about this box. I got three books I had not heard of and they look very interesting. I like the surprise aspect of the boxes and not knowing what I am going to get. I have been looking at other boxes to see if there are others I would want to try, but they tend to be a little bit more expensive. So we shall see. But I highly recommend this box or the other box they offer. Book Riot is also getting ready to do a comic quarterly box. So keep your ears open for that one if that is more your style.

Judging a Book by Its Lover

This post is about the book Judging a Book by Its Lover by Lauren Leto. I received this book in the Book Riot second Quarterly box. While I do recommend that service, it is amazing. I was not thrilled with this selection. It is something I would not have picked up on my own, so I was happy for the chance to get a chance to try something different. I really wanted to love this book. But I didn't like it as much as I thought I would. I didn't find it very humorous. I am usually not a huge fan of humor books, which may have also been why I had some problem with it. But it was about books so I hoped that would balance it out. I was happy to have a book to check off my humor box in the 25 book challenge.

I got another book in the Quarterly box and am excited to check that one out. I loved my box and can't wait until June to get the third one. You should go to bookriot.com and check out their Quarterly box.

A Rogue by Any Other Name and Oyster

I have finish quite a few book since my last post, so I will be posting reviews and pictures over the next couple weeks. I am going to start back by telling you about the last book I finished. I read A Rogue by Any Other Name by Sarah MacLean. This is actually the first book I have read by this author and was absolutely delighted. I loved how she created characters I cared about very quickly. It was a fast paced read and I was so hooked I finished it in two days. The story is believable and you can't help but fall in love with all the characters. This is the first book in a series of four books. What first grabbed my attention was the loevly cover of this book.

The story revolves around a Lord who has lost everything. He earns his riches back by being one of the owners of gaming hell. But he still wants the land he lost to a trusted guardian in a card game. When a childhood friend has the land added to her dowry he decides to take action. I highly recommend this book.

I also just subscribed to Oyster Books. It is fantastic. I had been hearing about it on the Book Riot podcast for a few months and last week finally decided to check it out. It is amazing. There are a lot of different types of books. It has award winners and past New York Times Bestsellers. I was very excited about all the different romance novels and fiction that was available. It is only $9.95 a month and you can read as many books as you want.

reading tonight and Dear Book Nerd

So tonight as I snuggle up against the cold and drink a glass of wine I am reading Celebrity in Death by J.D. Robb. I really love this series. it is one of my favorite series. And that is not very hard to believe since I am reading the 34th book in the series. I love the way she describes her characters and how they interact with each other. This series is just really fun and entertaining. So that is what I will be reading to make me feel better after a very long day at work.

As I was listening to the latest podcast from Book Riot they announced another book podcast. It is called Dear Book Nerd. I listened to the first show and it was delightful. I subscribed to it already. It will be released every other week right now. So I was super excited about that. The show is an advice column revolving around books...which is very cool!

I also caved and put in an order for the book box that Book Riot does. This is the second book box that they will be releasing. So I will be getting that in March. So I am pretty excited about that.

Jim Henson and book riot

So I got my copy of Jim Henson The Biography by Brian Jay Jones in the mail today. I am very excited to read this book. I need to finish the book I am reading now first, but I am glad I got it. It wasn't one I could find easily and so I decided to buy it while I was thinking about it. I am a very large Jim Henson fan. I love the Muppets, Sesame Street, and Fraggle Rock, just to mention his shows. I have read some things about him and find his life very interesting. We had an exhibit come to the Museum of Natural History about Jim Hanson and we got to see some real Muppets and drawings. So I am excited to learn more about this amazing man.

I also have to add that I am loving the Book Riot podcasts. I have been listening to them and they are full of really interesting book information and discussion. If you are interested in learning more about what is going on in the world of books this podcast is amazing. There is an app for it and you can get it on itunes.

Access to books and audio books

So I have seen a lot of debates and talk back and forth about e-readers vs print books. I have owner a Nook since they came out with the 1st generation. I recently updated my Nook Simple Touch to their new Nook Glowlight. I wanted an e-reader that had a back light. I also have an IPad mini which is where I read my library books and my iBooks, Kindle, and my Barnes and Noble e-books. Now I do still read a lot of print books as well. here is how I decide which medium to use. The first thing I look at is price. If it is on sale or a lot cheaper as an e-book, then I buy it for my Nook. I buy most of my books through Barnes and Noble since I have their e-reader. My Kindle and iBooks libraries are mostly free books that I come across. I get a lot of those from Book Bub. You set up your account and tell them what you like to read and which devices you read on. I also use coupons and discounts through websites to see which is the best way to buy the book.

Now I read a lot of books. So this has lead me to look into other ways to get books. I have started going to the library more to take out books and audio books. I am looking into Oyster which lets you read any books you want in their library for 9.95 a month. So even if I read one book a month from them it is paid for. I heard a pretty good review on it on the Book Riot podcast. This will be a service I check out later this year while I try to read through the books I already have on my shelf. I am also looking into doing audible. I will be worth the $15 dollars a month to get the audio books. I am not always able to find audio books I want to listen to at the library. So this will give me more options in that regard. I have been listening to more audio books lately and I am enjoying listening to them when I am in the car or doing chores. So those are some things I am looking into to see if I can save some money in the long run.

Book Riot

So I have been following a site called Book Riot on Facebook for a while now. I am not sure how I stumbled upon it, but I do follow a lot of different book sites. Well I do have to say I am impressed with their website. Today I actually went to their website to check it out and explore what they have. The site has all different articles on books and things like that.

What I got really excited about is that they have podcast about books. let me tell you I was pretty excited. I started the first one and liked it enough that I will be downloading more of them tonight. I had actually been looking for something like this and am very glad I discovered it. Book Riot actually has a free app for your phone or iPod so that you can get the podcasts. I have it on my phone and it is very easy to use.

The website also does a quarterly subscription to their book box. I am really tempted to get the one they send out in March. The box is $50 and it comes with a book and a bunch of book related items. The first one they put together looked pretty cool. I just haven't decided if I want to spend the money on it. I may wait and see what their second one is like before I decide or I may just take a chance on it. It depends on how well I can budget for it to be honest with you.

Here is the website for any of you interested in checking out this great book resource.
